Hazy Singapore, PSI as high as 421!!

Sporting the hottest fashion craze in Singapore
As luck would have it, we were right in the middle of the country's worst haze ever. When we arrived, the air quality level in Singapore was hovering at 300 PSI (Pollutant Standards Index), breaching the "hazardous" classification.

The PSI level is reported on an hourly basis by the National Environment Agency (NEA). Note that 101-200 is unhealthy, 201-300 is 'very' unhealthy and over 300 is hazardous.

Last Friday at noon, the PSI  reached up to 421 level. That's when Pinky stepped out to lunch with her former student who is taking her masters degree at Lasalle College of the Arts . She said that the whole of Singapore looked like a foggy day in London, all white, the visibility was less than 500 meters.  She said that while  walking, she experienced difficulty in breathing.

It's no joke. I was mostly indoors in the hotel where the workshop was taking place. The strong smell of burning vegetation was wafting through the air-tight, air-conditioned room. In fact, that Friday, the screen was blurred due to the dust particles between the projector and the screen. I felt my lungs burning as I was breathing and my nose was already runny and eyes swollen. The photo below shows how the haze can impact one's health.

The government of Singapore was urging residents to remain indoors and to wear not just any ordinary surgical mask but a N-95 particulate respirator mask. This type of mask  filters 95% of airborne particulates; otherwise, it's better to use a damp cloth to cover one's mouth and nose. The masks were already sold out and a few stores were selling  for as high as S$10 a piece (original price is S$2). Pinky got our masks in Mercury Drug Store for only PhP 95.

Apparently, the haze occurs annually when neighboring Indonesia clears their plantations specifically in Sumatra through the slash-and-burn technique. This is similar to our kaingin system where farmers burn forests to create agricultural fields

Our taxi driver said that it was the worst in years and was blaming the palm oil companies of Indonesia for burning over 100,000 acres of peatland. Palm oil is used in the production of cooking oil and is used in the manufacture of cosmetics, soaps and now biodiesel fuel. He said that the plantations clear the land every five years.
Pinky singing at O'Leary

Well, despite the haze, Pinky was able to swing a mini-concert called "Pinky Amador in Transit". Thanks to Jun and Mylene Flores, DeoVirtucio and the Requiem Rising and instant PA Roselle Effrancia who organized everything at the O'Leary's Bar and Grill (next to the Singapore Flyer). There were more than a hundred Filipinos who watched the show.

Tips for those Singapore or Malyasia-bound during this hazy period:
1. Check the NEA website of Singapore or  Malaysia every hour for it's pollution index reading. The index will tell you the reading from healthy to unhealthy to hazardous.
2. Wear a N-95 mask outdoors when it reaches an "unhealthy" level and also indoors when it reaches "hazardous". (Note to bring your own mask since the country may run out).
3. Keep hydrated by drinking  lots of water.
4. Use nasal sprays and eye drops.

Youtube swim sensation Shinji Takeuchi

Wow is all I can say after watching youtube swimming sensation Shinji Takeuchi's Total Immersion video. He swims effortlessly and it seems like his head barely comes out of the water to breathe. His video "The Most Graceful Freestyle" (2008) is now ranked number one worldwide among swimmers. He really makes swimming  look easy, just gliding in the water for 2:48. Right now it has been viewed 3.9 million times (note though that Psy's gangnam sytle is still #1 with 1.6 billion views).

I was able to meet him up close and personal last weekend with effervescent Tessa P. who hosted the
Coach Shinji Takeuchi with TI Philippines' Ria
closing ceremony of  'Smart, Speed and Open Water Skills Camp". Total Immersion Philippines' Ria Macay  invited coach Shinji of Total Swimming West in Japan to hold the open water skills clinic, a 3-day weekend class in Batangas.

The participants were mostly triathletes who would like to  learn how to swim the distance without getting tired and  master open water skills such as sighting, swimming straight and drafting to maintain speed. The highlight was his 'perpetual motion freestyle', four key stroke habits for tireless swimming. This is to swim with ease and flow to go the distance or a hundred untinerrupted strokes.

before the race with Coach Ria

Coach Shinji said "when you submerge your head, a vow wave is created and the level of the surface gets lower. I do not roll my head so much since the surface is 8-10 inches(20-25cm) lower than the original one."

The culminating activity was an open water race 500m for kids and for adults - a choice of 1km or 2km distance. Luckily, it was sunny and the water was calm and no stingers. I crazily joined the 1-km swim and managed to finish without cramping. Mind you, I haven't been training at all.  Tessa, on the other hand,  joined the 2-km distance and finished third! She could've finished first if she didn't stop before and after transitions to pose for her fans. LOL!

The cost of the 3-day swimming clinic  was pegged at  USD550 for international participants and USD450 for Philippine residents. The  private tutorial was pegged at  USD120 for 35-minutes. Coach Ria said that he'll be back this third quarter for a longer distance openwater clinic.

what a beautiful day, the venue

the Big Scare, C that is

Monet in the 2011 Death Ride, top of Carson Pass
It's hard to believe that my super healthy, non-smoker athletic sister - note that she was a butterfly stroke champion swimmer in College, Miss Body Building California after College and currently, a regular Tour of the California Alps-Death Ride biker - was recently diagnosed with the "Big C".

Cancer has become so dreadful that if you hear news of someone close diagnosed with it, it's very difficult to
think positive.  That's why when we learned of her condition, we were stunned, frozen, shocked and flabbergasted.

Early this year, on February 20, she said "it was my heart that told me I had a lung problem. I did not know until we [we referring to her partner Jim] had a CT scan. We found out after surgery, [that I was] diagnosed as Stage 1, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).  Most of the lung cancer patients know they have cancer at stage 3 or 4, when it is too late and has metastasis in other organs."

With this news my sister Chato was already in panic and she made plans to travel to Berkeley where she lives. In case you don't know, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States among both men and women. Current Genomics in 2010 reported that there were over 200,000 new cases per year, claiming more lives than do colon, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers combined.
Monet now totally vegan, at Millenium

As I said, my sister doesn't smoke and is extremely healthy and strong. Mind you, she bikes centuries (100 miles) for practice.  The signs and symptoms for this particular malady are not obvious e.g. the coughing up blood may be mistaken for tuberculosis. Mayo Clinic lists the following signs and symptoms: a new cough that doesn't go away, smokers cough, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing, hoarseness, losing weight without trying, bone pain and headache.

The lungs are the most important organ in the body for breathing and this, provide oxygen to the blood. Note though that Pope Francis had his lung removed when he was a teenager 40 years ago. So, we can survive with one lung.

There are five lobes in the lungs - three on the right and two on the left. Her surgeon Ashish R. Patel, MD removed the top right lobe. The report from the lung lobectomy and lab test indicated as she shared "The best news is the cancer is located only in the right lung and has not spread to any lymph nodes. I don't have to go through chemo or radiation."

We were jubilant with the news. Early detection is indeed the secret in the 'Big C'.  However, on March 2. she relayed that there was a minor surgery complication, a chyle leak.

Because of the minor complication, she changed her diet completely. She said  "Per surgeon, I have to follow a very low calorie and non-fat diet for 10 to 14 days days then introduce fat very slowly to the system. I will have an x-ray this Sunday to make sure it is not draining in my lung cavity. The surgeon will call me if this is the case. When I start introducing the fat on March 11, I need to have x-rays done to make sure it does not collect in the lungs. If this does not work. I may need to do surgery to close it. I still have that plastic bag glued on my side belly. So far, no leak."

in her element
With this news, Chato decided that we should all fly to Berkely immediately.

I must say that in three months time, her recovery was remarkable. She looked well, strong and fit in her usual cheerful, all smile demeanor. It was only when she climbed a flight of stairs and heard her wheezing that we realized she was not yet fully recovered.

She has completely embraced  Dr. David Servan-Schreiber anticancer diet to prevent cancer to reoccur in her body.  She said "I do not eat eggs, dairy (even yogurt), meat, poultry and pork. Maybe fish once in two weeks for omega-3. Most of my food sources are from vegetables, fruit, beans, legumes, seeds and nuts and whole grain. Very little oil in my cooking."

My sister has always been the strong one in the family. With her steel determination and courage, I'm sure she'll manage to overcome this setback. In fact, she is already training for the Death Ride this July. The course is extremely challenging, the distance is129 miles (207 km), 15,000 feet climb,  covering five mountain passes from Turtle Rock Park to Monitor (8,314 ft) to Ebbets (8,730 ft) and Carson (8,580 ft). This time, she'll be in tandem with her partner instead of riding solo. Good luck sis!!

Are your fingers twitching?

Madonna and Marisa HarNadh
Well, mine are. Specifically the right forefinger and middle finger. I realized this only yesterday in Anilao and my friends kidded that the cause may probably be from playing too much Candy Crush on my iPad.

Actually Madonna pointed out that I may be experiencing manifestations of kundalini.  I've recently started kundalini yoga upon her prodding. I messaged our  teacher, Marisa HarNadh to inquire about the twitching to which she said  "we're not yet doing anything in our Kundalini practice to trigger a full blown Kundalini Awakening.. if anything, the journey through the chakras will unclog blocks in your healing system to help you."

Marisa added "An awakening is not without its inconveniences but certainly worth the effort. When we begin to awaken spiritually, new kundalini energy is released from our root chakras to travel throughout our beings. In order for this greater energy to flow through, our energetic channels have to expand to accommodate it. If we are carrying any blocks or impediments to the stronger flow, this when they will become apparent."

Aside from the fingers twitching, my body has been doing strange things lately. Madonna's 8-year old daughter noticed my right eye was spasmic last weekend and asked her mum why it was rolling off the wrong way. Yikes! Marisa explained that  in kundalini "when energy suddenly breaks free, we may experience ... muscle twitches, rushes or surges of energy, spontaneous movement and vocalizations - the list is extensive."   She said these strange physical manifestations happen because 'we simply haven't yet developed the capacity for greater flow."

I've been practicing yoga for quite some time but this is the first time I'm doing Kundalini yoga. According to Swami Sivananda, "Kundalini Yoga at its highest form is practiced for the purpose of attaining bliss, opening the heart center, developing power, serving others, attaining self-realization and ultimately merging into God consciousness."

Ravi Singh described a typical Kundalini yoga class as follows: it starts  with a breathing exercise, then spinal warm ups and stretching followed by a set called a Kriya. He said that a Kriya is "a poetic progression of exercises which work in concert to create a synergistic, multi-dimensional exponential effect. One Kriya might focus on detoxing the liver or working through creative blocks, mastering your moods or possbly developing will power."

Anyway, Marisa said not to worry and everything is fixable. She advised to observe symptoms and not to panic. She said "anything your body may have incurred due to lifestyle and experiences can be healed."
