The 2013 Binibining Pilipinas Gold Pageant

#46 Amanda
If it wasn't for renowned photographer Mandy Navasero, I wouldn't have gone to Araneta Coliseum to witness the 50th Binibining Pilipinas pageant last night.  Juris and I went to cheer for her daughter -- candidate #46, 21-year old Amanda Noelle Navasero.

Mandy was actually surprised when Amanda, who is graduating this year, announced that she wanted to join the pageant. Amanda told  her that she got inspired by 2012 Bb Pilipinas Universe  Janine Mari Tugonon who was proclaimed 1st runner-up in  the 2012 Miss Universe  beauty pageant in Las Vegas, USA on December 19, 2012.

I've known Amanda since she was a baby and I must tell you that she has bloomed from a tall, somewhat shy girl to a confident young woman.

It was my first time to witness a pageant and it was indeed a nerve wracking experience. 50 Binibing Pilipinas candidates were selected to mark the 50th year of the pageant. 1960 Miss International titleholder from Columbia, Stella Marquez Araneta, who is the current chairperson of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc.said "I want to thank you especially the people who have supported our pageant for rmany years."

The event paid tribute to past and current titleholders. Among the beauty queens present were Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969), Aurora Pijuan (Miss International 1970), Ruffa Gutierrez (Miss World 1993), Miriam Quiambao (Miss Universe 1999, 1st runner up), Precious Lara Quigaman (Miss International 2005), Venus Raj (Miss Universe, 4th runner up), Shamcey Supsup (Miss Universe 2011, 3rd runner up), Tugonon (Miss Universe 2012, 1st runner up), Nicole Schmitz (Miss International 2012 semifinalist), Katrina Jayne Dimaranan (Bb Pilipinas-Tourism), Elaine Kay Moll (Miss Suprantional 2012 3rd runner up), and Annalie Forbes (Bb Pilipinas 2nd runner up).

Kudos to Amanda! Among the 50 candidates, she made it to the top 15!!! And congratulations to candidate #41, 24-year old  Arielle Arida from Laguna who was crowned Bb Pilipinas Universe.

Mandy's Posing Safari in Batanes

employees at the top of the hill
That's what we did all weekend - pose!  My officemates were more inclined to be the subject with the breathtaking view of Batanes as the background than the other way around. I'm now calling the trip last weekend - Mandy Navasero's Posing Safari.

It was the first time for the 30 employees [and family] plus the four guests [German couple Klaus and Silke,  Tess and Nenette from Pampanga]  to visit Batanes and also their first time to join Mandy's photo safari.

They absolutely had fun posing of course. Those who were not accustomed to walking or running, enjoyed trekking the hills, even dared enter the Japanese tunnel, attempted jumpology and some wanted to do a Dawn Zulueta "lift" in the scene of the movie Hihintayin ktia sa langit.

Batanes, located at the northermost tip of the Philippines, is comprised of ten islands, three of which are inhabited. It is by far,  the purest destination that I've ever visited. The  distance from Manila (659 km) and being surrounded by rough seas - South China Sea and Philipine Sea- has pretty much isolated it from the rest of the country. The people called Ivatans are generally peace-loving and friendly having only a population of 16,000 distributed in six municipalities. There's hardly any pollution, no blaring karaoke noise and zero crime rate.

I've actually teased Mandy that it's her doing  for making Batanes popular. She was the first to bring a herd of  tourists every summer with her photo safaris. She coined most of the tourist spots like the 'Dawn Zuleta Hills' (original name is Lorrance), Marlboro Hills (Payuman), the Fountain of Youth, etc..  I was one of the first 21 students who joined her initial foray to Batanes on April 13, 2006. Back then, there were only three flights a week and there were no others tourists. The weather was so unpredictable that Batanes gained notoriety for its frequent flight cancellations.

Fundacion Pacita Abad
A lot has changed since my last visit  in 2008 which by the way included a trip to Itbayat. There are now more hotels with Fundacion Pacita's bed and breakfast being the most posh; our lunch in Marlboro Hills is no longer a picnic but inside a hut; and our lunch in Sabtang beach is also inside a hut.  Batanes though still continues to amaze me with its  picturesque terrain, charming stone cottages, lighthouses, white sand beach with giant boulders and golden sunsets. I still manage to come home taking more than a hundred photos! In fact, some people mistake my photos for Scottland, Ireland or even New Zealand except that when they take a closer look, they see carabaos grazing in the background.

A must visit is Sabtang Island,  declared by the Department of Tourism as one of the 12 Best Destinations in the country. Typical Ivatan homes line up the streets, people walk around wearing uvuds (traditional raincoats). To get there is a bit tricky because the sea is usually rough. It is a 30-min faluwa boat ride from Basco. The window to travel is from 5am to 8am from the Port of Ivana and out of Sabtang at least by 2pm.  We definitely experienced a roller coaster ride heading back to the island.

Coconut crab

And lastly, while in Batanes, don't forget to enjoy its culinary delights!!!  My favorite must-eats are coconut crabs (order a day in advance though), my favorite lumpiang dibang (flying fish),  dibang-silog for breakfast which is dried flying fish with sunny side up egg on rice, giant squid calamares, lobster (order a day in advance) and kamote!!

Remembering Gig Robles

"Appreciation represents the 'A' in the word HAPPY" according to Bishop Honesto Ongtioco who officated the mass this morning for the first death anniversary of Gig Robles who passed away exactly a year ago at age 17.
Bishop Ongtioco started his sermon with a quote from Gig's poem [that appeared in Mandy Navasero's column last Saturday]:

Thank you, Lord
For my home
For the Philippines
It's a wonderful country.
This life
I hope I live it properly.
Thank you for this earth,
This uninverse, this dimension.
For the air I breathe, the water I drink,
For the people around me,
And for the rest of the world.
Thank you, Lord
For the Pope and the Dalai Lama,
And all those who advocate peace.

I met Gig and his mom Marissa last year at Mandy's Batanes Photo Safari. He struck me as one of those renaissance man, well-traveled, well-mannered, has good grades and involved in music, poetry and sports. The poem which appears in the book Read to Bridge Oceans shows his sensitivity at a tender age of 17. I'm trying to recall what I was up to at that age... Nope, I was more like frivolous and selfish definitely not concerned about peace or thanking God. We do take things for granted - even today, who would think of appreciating the minutest of everday existence like the air we breathe and the water we drink? And to go beyond planet earth and 'this dimension'?
Even Kabalist Yehuda Berg advises to "begin the day with gratitude and realize life itself is a miracle. Recognize the precision and wonder of nature." A 17-year old recognized this. I guess today is a wake up call for me to be mindful and thankful each day for everything life has to offer and I'd like to start by being thankful for giving me the opportunity to meet Gig at this lifetime.
